According to Servius, Cato ipse told the story that the Laconian Sabus, a contemporary of Lycurgus, migrated to Latium (fr. 51-2 P.). The Sabine Claudii naturally became the patrons of their Spartan relatives (Suet. Tib. 6.2; cf. Dio 54.7.2; Silius Italicus 8.412). The Fabii answered by claiming descent from Hercules. The earliest evidence known to me about the special devotion of the Fabii to Hercules goes back to Fabius Cunctator in the second Punic War (Plin. N.H. 34.40). It is virtually certain that Friedrich Muenzer was mistaken in taking the Herculean legend of the Fabii as an invention of an Augustan antiquarian (P.-W., s.v. Fabii). It is, however, true that Roman aristocrats were usually wary of divine origins. Greek or Trojan ancestors were quite enough to support their claims to power.
